We all grew up with that idyllic image — mountains, a hut, and a stream. This exact scene comes to life in the tranquil hills of Manali, where nature’s charm takes centre stage. Raison D’etre, a homestay conceptualised with care, is a haven for nature lovers — it’s the perfect destination for a winter vacation.
Located on the banks of the Beas River in the scenic hills of Manali, Raison D’etre offers a serene retreat for those seeking solace. It’s a labour of love by Shalini and Nitin Beri, a couple who left behind their corporate careers to create this peaceful haven.
The leap from corporate life Shalini and Nitin didn’t want to get trapped in the 'corporate rat race’. After spending years working in cities like Mumbai and Delhi, the couple made a bold decision in 2013 to quit their jobs, leave the fast-paced city life behind, and settle in Kullu for good.
While searching for the perfect spot, they stumbled upon a magical piece of land by the Beas River. "We knew it was the right place from the moment we saw it," says Shalini. And this marked the first chapter of Raison D’etre’s story.
Raison D’etre features four charming rooms, each named after a season: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each room offers breathtaking views of the Beas River and the Himalayas, with no televisions to distract from nature’s beauty.
One of the highlights of Raison D’etre is its farm-to-table dining experience. Shalini grows fresh ingredients like zucchini, edible weeds, and local fruits like persimmons and plums.
A sustainable retreat The couple has made sustainability a priority in every aspect of the homestay. From eco-friendly construction materials like insulating blocks and double-glazed windows to using solar energy for daily operations, Raison D’etre is designed to minimise its carbon footprint.
In their effort to make the homestay energy-efficient, the couple also installed geothermal heat pumps that tap into the naturally warm spring water on the property. This innovative system provides an efficient and eco-friendly heating solution for the entire building.
Having faced power cuts in the region, Shalini and Nitin also installed a solar system that generates electricity to run the entire property, and any excess energy is stored in batteries for backup. "Even on days with only 30 percent sunlight, the system works efficiently," says Nitin.
Raison D’etre is more than a getaway—it’s a chance to reconnect with nature. Whether you’re chasing butterflies in the garden or meditating by the river, this homestay offers a serene sanctuary like no other.
