Inspired by Their Village Roots, Pune Couple Built a Solar-Powered Home Away from the City

Anant Farms, built by Anirudha Ambekar and his wife Sucheta, marries sustainability with rich cultural heritage, drawing inspiration from Anirudha’s childhood village memories in Gangakhed.

Situated in Bramhanghar near Pune, Anant Farms is surrounded by historic forts like Torna and Rajgad, offering serene and lush environments akin to Mahabaleshwar, especially during monsoons.

The 3,000 sq ft home integrates traditional construction techniques, featuring a central courtyard reminiscent of Anirudha’s ancestral home.

The couple prioritised sustainability by using local materials such as red stones from Konkan for walls and Jaisalmer stone tiles for flooring, maintaining natural temperature regulation.

Antique teakwood doors, windows, and heirloom furniture from Anirudha’s family home add historic character and sustainability to the house.

Rainwater harvesting systems capture monsoon rains, storing water in a pond with an eight lakh litre capacity, meeting 85-90 percent of their annual water needs.

Solar panels significantly reduce their reliance on electricity, slashing their monthly bill from Rs 5,000 to Rs 500.

The farm practices organic farming, producing a variety of fruits, vegetables, and spices, reinforcing the farm-to-table lifestyle and reducing reliance on external food sources.

The couple warmly hosts guests, sharing insights into their sustainable lifestyle and encouraging mindful living.

Anirudha and Sucheta’s commitment focuses on blending tradition with innovation, creating a sustainable legacy that serves as a model and inspiration for others interested in sustainable living.

“For us, this isn’t just a home; it’s a sanctuary of memories and an inspiring blueprint for others to follow,” Anirudha notes.
