Neenu Rathin, the founder of Social Town, is on a mission to connect changemakers, NGOs, and volunteers to create lasting social impact. Her journey showcases the transformative power of following one’s true passion.

Shifting gears: Passion over profession Growing up in Thrissur, Kerala, Neenu was a bright student but felt something was missing. Despite academic success, she lacked ‘passion’ and was searching for a deeper sense of purpose.

Neenu initially chose engineering as a sensible career path. “I realised how I was not here because of my passion but just for a degree,” she recalls. Her desire for a fulfilling career led her to explore new directions beyond academics.

Neenu worked as a lecturer, but she felt a disconnect with her students’ enthusiasm. “I lacked professional experience beyond my degree,” she admits. This realisation pushed her to reconsider her career path.

Kerala floods: A turning point for Neenu In 2013, Neenu began volunteering with the Art of Living Foundation, where she found her calling in social impact work. Her first project — planting trees in schools to educate students about environmental conservation — sparked a new passion for social change.

The 2018 Kerala floods became a pivotal moment for Neenu. Witnessing how communities came together in collective action to provide relief strengthened her belief in the power of unity to drive change.

During the 2019 Kerala floods, Neenu played an active role in rehabilitating tribal communities. “The motivation from helping people in need kept me going,” she recalls. This experience deepened her commitment to social work and reinforced her belief in service.

Empowering change through unity In 2020, Neenu founded Social Town to connect changemakers, NGOs, and volunteers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform quickly grew, from 500 to over 6,000 members, becoming a thriving community focused on social good.

Social Town helps changemakers access the resources they need to succeed. Neenu’s platform also provides NGOs with visibility and funding, ensuring they can continue their vital work.

Akber Ali, a social worker in Wayanad, shares how Social Town helped during the COVID-19 crisis: “Neenu was the first person I contacted to help us,” he says.

Social Town also helps volunteers find the right projects that align with their skills and passion. Neenu believes that anyone, regardless of background, can make a difference. The platform helps individuals take the first step towards meaningful social work.

Inspiring collective impact Neenu’s core belief is that “together, we can create endless possibilities.” Through Social Town, she continues to inspire others to come together, volunteer, and be the change they want to see in the world.

Neenu’s journey is a reminder that passion, when aligned with purpose, has the power to transform communities. Through Social Town, she’s creating a space for people to unite, collaborate, and make a lasting impact.
