Picture a typical busy day at Mumbai’s Khar Road and Naigaon railway stations. Amidst the clamor of commuters and the rush of trains, stands a row of five blue and white mini windmills.
As local trains speed by, the strategically placed vertical axis wind turbines capture the kinetic force of the wind.
These turbines are designed to pivot with alignment to the strongest wind formed by passing trains, each generating up to two kilowatts. Together, they promise a combined output of up to 10 kilowatts.

The seed for these turbines was planted during global explorations by WR officials. Witnessing similar turbines abroad encouraged them to replicate such green innovations in India.
By tapping into the very winds created by its trains, they reduce dependency on fossil fuels, marking a significant stride in eco-conscious transportation.
Monsoonal high winds and torrential rains are crucial testing grounds for these turbines. Their performance in such conditions could affirm their viability.
These turbines not only generate power; they stand as symbols of renewable energy potential, ready to light up Mumbai if their promise is realised and expanded.

This project is the beginning of what could be a pivotal shift towards alternative energy usage within Indian Railways.
As the mini windmills turn, powered by train gusts, they signal a call to action for continued innovation in renewable energy solutions across the nation.
