By early May, when markets are flooded with mangoes, many wait for ‘better’ varieties.

While the rains push varieties like Alphonso and Kesar, along with some artificially ripened mangoes, off the shelves, several other varieties arrive once the monsoon sets in.

The rains act as an ally of mangoes, bringing in more humidity and moderate temperature to help the fruit thrive.

So, you can still brace for sweeter and juicier mangoes. Here are five varieties of mangoes that arrive late in the season.

Dasheri Grown largely near Kakori in the Lucknow district of Uttar Pradesh, this tempting mango variety is renowned for its juicy pulp and deliciously sweet taste. It is harvested around June-July.

Chausa Starting from mid-July, markets are flooded with chausa mangoes. This variety has a golden-yellow colour, a buttery texture, and low fibre content.

Langra Available between June and August, langra mangoes have peach-coloured flesh that is sweet with a rustic flavour. These mangoes are long and oval-shaped with golden-yellow skin.

Neelum Primarily grown in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, this very late-season mango usually arrives in the market in August and September. It is saffron yellow with a red tinge and has a sweet and sour taste.

Makaram Known as ‘cuckoo of mangoes’, makaram mangoes are available after the first spell of monsoon rains. They are purplish-red in colour.
