Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty is set to receive the esteemed Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his outstanding contributions to Indian cinema. But did you know that before rising to fame, Mithun often slept on footpaths and struggled to find food while searching for work?
Upon receiving the news of the award, Mithun, born Gouranga Chakraborty in Kolkata in 1950, said, “I still remember how I once slept on Mumbai’s footpaths. I had to fight for everything.”
Here are nine lesser known facts about the 'Disco King' of Bollywood:
1. After graduating from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, Mithun found himself struggling in the streets of Mumbai. He had no accommodation and would often find refuge in hostels and footpaths.
2. In a 2022 interview, the actor had said that he had to take a membership in the Matunga Gymkhana club so that he could use the shower facilities.
3. Mithun’s big break came in 1976 with Mrinal Sen’s Mrigayaa, where he portrayed Ghinua, a Santhal tribal rebel. This role earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, marking the start of an illustrious career.
4. “When I got my first National Award, a journalist approached me for an interview. I told him I was hungry as I didn’t have money to buy food and he was kind enough to get me something to eat,” he recalled.
5. Mithun became a household name with the 1982 blockbuster Disco Dancer. His vibrant dance moves and catchy songs turned him into an international star, earning him the title ‘Disco King’.
6. In 1986, a year after the release of Pyar Jhukta Nahin, the ‘Disco King’ had become one of India’s highest tax-paying celebrities joining the likes of Amitabh Bachchan.
7. In 1991, Mithun’s role as Krishnan Iyer Nariyal Pani Wala in Agneepath, earned him a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also won National Awards for his performances in Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998).
8. The 74-year-old actor has appeared in over 370 films across multiple languages, marking a career spanning over five decades. His roles range from action heroes to sensitive characters, showcasing his incredible versatility as an actor.
9. Beyond acting, Mithun is deeply involved in philanthropy, supporting education and healthcare initiatives for underprivileged communities, proving his heart is as big as his talent. MIthun has also served as a Rajya Sabha member.
