What fuels the determination to breathe new life into a neglected, rundown school? For Gopal Bhalwala, a government teacher in Rajgarh, Madhya Pradesh, the answer is simple:  "All it takes is passion."

When Gopal joined the Integrated Middle School in Mohanpura Colony in 2018, the school had fewer than 23 students. The classrooms were dark and lacked basic facilities.

“The walls lacked paint, and there was a noticeable lack of enthusiasm in the students’ eyes, which troubled me the most," says Gopal. The students came from families where survival often took precedence over education.

This was the moment when Gopal knew he had to act, but waiting for bureaucratic funds was off the table. So he decided to spend Rs 3 lakh from his own savings to renovate the school — painting walls, planting a garden, installing a water supply, and setting up a library.

“I undertook the task of making the place the most colourful building in the area,” says Gopal. He painted murals, animals, and birds on the walls, turning the school into a vibrant space.

The school now boasts brightly lit classrooms, clean water, and a library stocked with over 2,000 books. "The students were amazed to see the transformation," Gopal shares.

Shivani, a Class 10 student, shares, "I clearly remember the old school. It didn’t have water or proper washrooms, but I loved studying and didn’t want to miss out. Now, everything has changed. Gopal sir is not just a great teacher but also a great person. We now have water, mid-day meals, beautiful classrooms, and a library!"

Sonu, a Class 7 student, says, “There were no trees or shade around the building. Now, the school has so many beautiful plants. There are lights and fans that keep the classes cool.”

Gopal informs that he keeps the kids involved by taking their help in maintaining the school. “This way they feel ownership and responsibility of the school too,” he notes.

With over 100 students now enrolled, Gopal plans to expand the school and introduce smart education tools, including LED TVs and other equipment, to further enhance the learning experience.

“While I have expended a considerable portion of my savings for this cause, what gives me immense satisfaction is the smiles on the students’ faces. That makes it all worthwhile,” Gopal shares.
