Born in Kolkata, Dr TK Lahiri studied medicine in the USA but returned to serve at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) for just Rs 250 per month.

A renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, he remained unmarried, dedicating his life to treating the needy, earning him the Padma Shri in 2016.

When asked to meet the Chief Minister, Dr. Lahiri humbly replied, “If he wants to meet me, ask him to come to my OPD."

Since 1994, Dr. Lahiri has donated his entire salary to the poor, living on a small portion of his pension and supporting patients in need.

Every morning, Dr. Lahiri walks to BHU with a bag and a black umbrella, maintaining his punctual routine even in his 70s.

For Varanasi’s poor, Dr. Lahiri is a beacon of hope, offering free treatment to those who can’t afford it.

Having trained thousands of doctors, Dr. Lahiri’s legacy is one of compassion, service, and dedication to humanity.

Dr Lahiri’s life challenges us to rethink our values, urging us to bring hope and healing in a world where medicine often loses its way.
