Meet 70-year-old Dipala Chauhan who has spent over three decades rescuing over 4,000 tortured animals.
These include dogs left out in the harsh winters of Shimla and old cattle abandoned by villagers.
These also include bulls thrown down hills and donkeys that are severely overworked.
It came with a price; people called her crazy, burnt her house and poisoned her dogs. But she continued undeterred.
Today, her shelter boasts hundreds of these tortured animals where they are given a safe home and a new lease on life.
To continue funding the shelter, she even sold parts of her land. “My animals are like my own children,” says Dipala, who often travels for hours to save one life.
The dream, she says, is to get permanent all-weather sheds for them.
