Amid traffic noises in Bengaluru, the Indian Music Experience (IME) museum offers an immersive journey through India’s musical history, blending tradition, innovation, and nostalgia. It’s a tribute to India’s rich cultural legacy.
The idea for IME was born from the vision of M R Jaishankar, sparked during a visit to the Grammy Museum. Realising that India — with its vast and diverse musical heritage — deserved a space dedicated to showcasing its music, Jaishankar set out to make that dream a reality.
What sets IME apart is its interactive approach. Visitors can explore artists, genres, and instruments through touchscreens and headsets. This hands-on experience brings music to life, making history tangible.
“Can you imagine a world without music?” IME asks visitors. Music is woven into every part of life — from lullabies to social movements. At IME, music becomes a tool to reflect on our collective journey.
IME is divided into three sections — galleries, sound garden, and learning centre — ensuring every visitor crafts their own unique experience. The galleries offer a rich mix of artefacts, documentaries, and music, covering everything from traditional folk songs to Bollywood hits.
The museum’s design, led by internationally renowned Gallagher & Associates, offers a feast for both the eyes and ears. From massive Bollywood billboards to intricate displays of folk music, IME captures the vibrancy and diversity of India’s musical traditions.
With sections dedicated to contemporary pop and fusion, the museum succeeds in making music accessible and enjoyable for the younger generation. “On average, most visitors we have are young people,” says Preema John, IME’s director.
IME also engages volunteers in its efforts. The museum’s docents — trained to guide school and weekend tours — range in age from 15 to 82. “We see them as extensions of our community,” says Preema.
Offering a tech-driven, engaging experience, IME includes virtual lessons and even a studio where you can sing a Bollywood number and get the recording mailed to you. It’s a place where music is not just heard but truly lived.
