This Stunning 'Rainbow' Squirrel Can Go Days Without Touching the Ground!

A squirrel like no other Unlike the common tree squirrel, the Indian giant squirrel (Ratufa indica) is one of the largest in the world, growing up to three feet long (including its tail). Its thick, bushy tail helps with balance as it leaps nearly 20 feet between branches!

A rainbow in the treetops This isn’t your ordinary squirrel!  Depending on its habitat, its coat can range from deep maroon and rust to beige, cream, and even black. This colour variation helps it blend seamlessly into the dappled sunlight of the forest.

Meet the arboreal acrobat With a body up to 36 inches long, this squirrel leaps 20 feet between trees, effortlessly gliding through the dense forests like a true aerial expert.

A solitary, secretive lifestyle These squirrels prefer living alone or in pairs, rarely descending to the ground. They build large leafy nests (dreys) high in the trees, often switching between multiple nests for safety. If you’re lucky, you might spot one lounging on a branch during the day.

A forest guardian Besides being a visual spectacle, the Indian giant squirrel plays a crucial role in maintaining the forest ecosystem. It helps with seed dispersal by eating a diverse diet of fruits, flowers, bark, and nuts, indirectly supporting plant regeneration.

A conservation icon Though listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, habitat loss due to deforestation poses a growing threat to the Indian giant squirrel. Conservation efforts in protected areas are key to ensuring their survival.
