Feeling the heat and swatting bugs all day? Lemongrass, a simple herb you can grow at home, can help you stay cool and keep mosquitoes at bay — naturally.

Why lemongrass? It’s not just a tea ingredient. Lemongrass is a tropical herb with natural cooling properties and mosquito-repelling powers — perfect for the Indian summer.

Lemongrass contains citronella, a natural oil known to repel mosquitoes. Plant it near windows, balconies, or outdoor seating areas for a chemical-free barrier.

A natural summer cooler Lemongrass tea supports digestion and helps regulate body temperature. Its diuretic nature reduces water retention and keeps you hydrated in dry heat.

How to grow it at home Start with fresh lemongrass stalks from the market. Trim the tops, place the base in a glass of water, and wait for roots to sprout. Once rooted, transfer to soil.

Best growing conditions Lemongrass thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Choose a sunny corner — on your balcony, terrace, or in a kitchen garden — and water it regularly.

To prevent drying out, mulch around the base in peak summer. If you’re in a cooler region, grow it in pots so you can move it indoors during winter.

How to use it Add fresh stalks to teas, soups, and curries for a citrusy aroma. Crushed leaves can also be rubbed on the skin as a quick mosquito repellent.

This summer, skip the sprays. Grow a pot of lemongrass instead. It’s fragrant, functional, and fits right into your home—whether it’s a tiny balcony or a backyard garden.
