8 Easy Steps to Grow Healthy Tomatoes in Your Home Garden During the Rainy Season

You don’t have to wait for summer to enjoy homegrown tomatoes. The monsoon has its own rhythm — and your plants can learn to dance with it.

1. Begin with the right variety Start with tomato varieties that survive in wet conditions. Pusa Ruby, Arka Meghali, and Roma are reliable choices for monsoon growing.

2. Prepare well-drained, rich soil Use loamy soil enriched with compost. Ensure good drainage — standing water during rains can quickly damage tomato roots.

3. Start seeds in a sheltered spot Begin seeds in trays or pots under cover. Let them grow until they have four or five strong leaves before moving them outdoors.

4. Transplant using raised beds When transplanting, raised beds are ideal. They lift the roots above waterlogged ground and help maintain healthy moisture levels.

5. Support your plants well Use bamboo stakes or tomato cages to keep plants upright. This keeps fruit off wet soil and prevents rotting.

6. Feed with natural fertilisers Tomatoes love nutrients, but not too much. Use compost or diluted cow dung every few weeks to keep growth steady without overfeeding.

7. Protect from pests and fungus Watch out for aphids, slugs, and fungal spots. Spray regularly with neem oil or a garlic-chilli mix to keep your plants strong.

8. Harvest just before heavy rain Pick tomatoes when they begin to turn red-orange. Leaving them too long during wet weather can lead to splitting or mould.

Your reward? Sweet, juicy tomatoes, full of monsoon flavour and grown with care — ready for you to enjoy.
