Do you want to grow a mango tree or other fruit trees right at your home? Growing fruits in pots is a great solution for city living. Gardeners have shown it’s possible even in small spaces like balconies or kitchens.

We spoke to Sushma Reddy, a passionate gardener from Bengaluru, who has transformed her terrace into a lush green haven with over 300 plants, including 70 fruit trees. Remarkably, all of her plants, including the fruit trees, grow in pots ranging from 10 to 16 inches in size.

1. Mango “First on my list is the ever popular Mango tree. This is a wonderful addition to any container garden. It thrives in pots and can be easily maintained with minimal effort,” says Sushma. Mango trees are perfect for container gardening and are easy to maintain. Soil Mix: Well-drained, rich in organic matter. Sunlight: At least 6 to 8 hours a day.

Temperature: Tolerates up to 48°C. Watering: Keep the soil moist; water twice in summer and when the topsoil dries in monsoon. Fertiliser: Add animal manure every 20 days.

2. Dragon Fruit Dragon fruit is low-maintenance and can be started from cuttings. Once established, it requires minimal attention and rewards you with colourful fruits. Soil Mix: Sandy, rich in organic matter. Sunlight: At least 6 to 8 hours a day.

Temperature: Tolerates up to 43°C. Watering: Water only when the topsoil dries; overwatering can kill the plant, warns Sushma. Fertiliser: Add animal manure once a month.

3. Calamondin Oranges Perfect for small spaces like balconies or terraces, this tree produces vibrant orange fruits. Soil Mix: Well-drained, rich in organic matter. Sunlight: Bright light, but protect the plant from harsh sun.

Temperature: Tolerates up to 32°C. Watering: Water when the topsoil dries. Fertiliser: Add animal manure once a month.

4. Water Apple This tropical tree yields crisp, watery fruits and grows quickly with minimal care. Soil Mix: Well-drained, rich in organic matter. Sunlight: At least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight.

Temperature: Tolerates up to 35°C. Watering: Keep soil moist, especially during flowering and fruiting. Fertiliser: Add animal manure once a month.
