Batumi, Georgia | 16 July 2025 India’s rising chess star, Divya Deshmukh, took on World No. 2 Zhu Jiner in the FIDE Women’s World Cup pre-quarters.
With calm precision and the white pieces, the 18-year-old outplayed her seasoned Chinese rival — taking a 1-0 lead in the two-game match.
One draw now stands between Divya and a historic milestone — becoming only the 2nd Indian woman to reach the quarterfinals, after Harika Dronavalli in 2023.
The FIDE Women’s World Cup isn’t just any tournament. Top 3 players qualify for the 2026 Women’s Candidates — a direct path to the World Championship.
Divya’s no stranger to stunning wins. She earlier defeated World No. 1 Hou Yifan at the Blitz Championship in London — earning praise from the Prime Minister.
Her chess journey began in Nagpur, Maharashtra, while tagging along to her sister’s badminton class.

Mentored by Grandmaster RB Ramesh at Chennai’s Chess Gurukul, Divya shone early — winning national and world youth titles.
By 2021, she became a Woman Grandmaster. In 2023, she added another feather — the International Master title.
Most recently, at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest. Divya helped Team India clinch gold — a proud moment for the country.
