Chennai’s Pink Autos Are Letting Women Travel Without Fear & Giving Other Women  a Way to Earn

In Chennai, a new wave of autos is changing the way women move. Pink Autos—driven by women, for women—are steering the city toward safer, more inclusive streets.

Under the Tamil Nadu Pink Auto Scheme, only women can operate these special autos. It’s a women-only opportunity aimed at building confidence and independence.

These autos are equipped with GPS, panic buttons, and safety alarms. The goal? Make sure women passengers feel secure, no matter the time of day.

The scheme not only improves last-mile connectivity for women but also helps reduce dependency on male-driven cabs and public transport during odd hours.

To apply, women must be aged 21–45, have a valid driving license, and belong to economically weaker sections. Basic education and fitness are also required.

Training is part of the package — applicants are taught driving, vehicle maintenance, safety protocols, and basic self-defence as part of their orientation.

The scheme focuses on major urban zones like Chennai and Coimbatore, where demand for women-friendly transport is high and female workforce mobility is vital.

This is more than a transport solution. It’s a livelihood mission — offering women the tools to earn, build confidence, and challenge gender norms on city streets.

Pink Autos aren’t just rides—they’re a revolution on three wheels. With every ride, they’re helping women claim space, earn dignity, and drive their futures forward.
